·ASTM D 4966 Standard Test Method for Abrasion Resistance of Textile Fabrics (Martindale Abrasion Tester Method)

Following the Association for Contract Textiles Guidelines for General Contract Upholstery using a Martindale Abrasion Tester - Martindale Abrasion Tester Method

Martindale Abrasion TesterScope: Covers the determination of the abrasion resistance of textile fabrics using the Martindale Abrasion Tester. Fabrics of all types may be tested by this method but difficulties may arise with fabrics with a pile depth greater than 0.08in.

  • Sample is conditioned and run in atmospheric conditions for textiles
  • A worsted wool cloth is used as an Abradant
  • A Lissajous figure is used to perform one cycle. A cycle consists of the 16 movements in the Lissajous figure
  • A 12kPa head weight is used on the machine
  • The number of cycles that the fabric can endure before fabric shows objectionable change in appearance (yarn breaks, pilling, holes) is counted
